Australian Pool Fencing Standards (AS1926.1-2012) – Key Requirements Whether you're installing a new pool fence or replacing an existing one, here are the key legal requirements for pool fencing in NSW: ​ 1. Minimum Fence Height The fence must be at least 1200mm high (1.2 metres) when measured from the finished ground level on the outside of the pool area. 2. Gate Requirements Pool gates must: Open outward (away from the pool). Be self-closing and self-latching from any open position. Use child-resistant latches positioned at least 1500mm from the ground or shielded in a compliant manner. 3. Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ) There must be a clear vertical space of at least 1200mm outside the pool fence (from top to bottom), free of any climbable objects or protrusions. Horizontal rails must be spaced at least 900mm apart to prevent climbing. 4. Maximum Gaps The gap under the fence must not exceed 100mm. Openings within the fence (e.g., between vertical bars) must also be no wider than 100mm. ​
